RI High School Sports Monday Recap: Results & Highlights

Monday marked another action-packed day across Rhode Island high school sports fields, courts, and trails. From last-second game-winners to dominant shutouts, here’s your complete recap of every notable result from the Ocean State’s high school athletics scene.

Boys Soccer: Overtime Thrillers and Shutouts

Division I Results

Moses Brown edged La Salle Academy 3-2 in overtime on Monday, with senior captain Jack Donahue netting the game-winning goal in the 87th minute. Donahue also added two assists in the victory, moving Moses Brown to 6-2 in Division I play.

Cumberland blanked Lincoln 2-0 to extend its unbeaten streak to six games. Junior striker Marco Ricci scored both goals for the Clippers, who sit atop the Division II standings.

Division II/III Results

Portsmouth claimed a 1-0 road win over Middletown, with sophomore midfielder Liam O’Connor scoring the lone goal in the 72nd minute. The win keeps Portsmouth in contention for a playoff spot in Division III.

Girls Soccer: Hat Tricks and Crosstown Wins

Division I Highlights

Barrington dominated East Providence 4-1 behind a hat trick from forward Anna Russo, who also added an assist. The win keeps Barrington undefeated at 8-0 in Division I, the only unbeaten team left in the state’s top girls soccer division.

North Kingstown edged rival South Kingstown 2-1 on a penalty kick goal from midfielder Ella Thompson in the 78th minute. The victory moves NK to 6-2 on the season.

Division II/III Results

Cranston East shut out crosstown rival Cranston West 3-0, with midfielder Sofia Vargas scoring twice. Cranston East improves to 5-3 in Division II play.

Other results: Portsmouth 2, Middletown 0; Narragansett 1, South Kingstown 0; Westerly 3, Stonington 1.

Field Hockey: Defensive Battles and Comeback Wins

Lincoln improved to 7-1 on the season with a 2-1 win over Smithfield. Senior defender Chloe Adams scored the game-winner in the 60th minute for Lincoln.

Warwick Vets notched a 1-0 win over Toll Gate in a defensive slugfest, with the lone goal coming from forward Mia Almeida in the 52nd minute.

Narragansett rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat South Kingstown 3-2, with junior forward Lily Chen scoring two second-half goals to spark the comeback.

Volleyball: Straight Set Wins and Kill Leaders

La Salle stayed unbeaten in Division I play with a 3-0 sweep of St. Raphael (25-18, 25-20, 25-15). Outside hitter Ava DeLuca had 12 kills and 8 digs for the Rams.

Cumberland beat Woonsocket 3-1, led by outside hitter Mia Torres’ 18 kills and 5 blocks. The win moves Cumberland to 7-1 in Division II.

Cross Country: Invitational Action Highlights Monday

North Kingstown’s Ben Smith won the individual title at the Rhode Island Interscholastic Cross Country Invitational, finishing the 5K course in 16:12. Smith led North Kingstown to the team championship, edging out Barrington by 12 points.

On the girls’ side, Barrington’s Sarah Jenkins took first overall in 19:45, leading Barrington to the team title. North Kingstown finished second in the girls’ team standings.
